You ever hit that switch after dinner and the sink just growls back at you?
Not the usual hum. More like a spoon in a blender. Happens a lot around Northwest Indiana, folks call and say, “It sounded fine yesterday, now it’s angry.”
Sometimes it’s nothing big. Sometimes it’s a problem waiting to happen. Hard to tell without looking, and I’ve looked under a lot of sinks since 2005. So, before you start taking things apart, (or buying a new unit), here’s what those sounds are usually trying to tell you.
The Main Reason it Starts Making Noise
Garbage disposals work hard. Small motor, spinning metal, water running through… they take a beating. Over time they loosen, they rust a little, they swallow what shouldn’t go down there.
In homes across Porter, Lake, and LaPorte Counties, I’ve pulled everything from coins to peach pits to an entire screw that fell from a cabinet hinge. Most times the noise is the clue before the breakdown. Listen close. You can usually guess what’s wrong.
The Sounds You Hear (And What They’re Saying)
1. Grinding or scraping
That’s something solid inside. Could be a fork, could be a bottle cap. Kill the power first — not just the switch, the breaker if you can reach it. Shine a light in, use tongs or pliers, never your hand.
If it keeps grinding after you clear it, those blades might be bent. We fix that all the time. One quick stop from Trapmasters Plumbing and it’s sorted before it eats the motor.
2. The low hum that never turns into a spin
That’s the motor trying but failing. Usually jammed. Hit the little red reset underneath. No luck? There’s a hex hole at the bottom — a gentle twist with an Allen key can free it.
If it still hums or trips the breaker, it’s the motor bearings. They don’t heal themselves. Call it in before the smell of burning insulation joins the mix.
3. Rattling, clanking, or shaking the counter
That loose, uneven rattle means something’s wobbling. Mounting ring, internal plate, could be both. Can you see the screws on the sink flang? Tighten them. Still knocking? Stop running it. (The vibration can crack your drain pipe.)
We do plumbing repairs for this kind of thing every week. Quick tighten-up, sometimes a reseal, back to quiet.
4. The shriek. High, sharp, makes you wince
That’s worn-out bearings. Once you hear that metal-on-metal squeal, your disposal’s not going to last much longer. You can fight it for a few weeks, but it’ll quit during a Sunday dinner, guaranteed.
When that happens, we’ll set you up with a new unit and install it right. Call through the contact page or just ring us.
A Few Things Worth Trying First
Not every noise means a service call.
Try these before you panic:
- Hit the reset button once. Wait a few seconds.
- Check inside with tongs.
- Skip chemical cleaners (they ruin seals).
- Run cold water, throw in some ice and a splash of vinegar, let it crunch for a bit.
If it still sounds off, stop. Forcing it can fry the motor.
Our team handles drain cleaning and disposal maintenance all over Northwest Indiana, so if it keeps misbehaving, we’ll take it from there. And if you want the official safety list, the EPA disposal guide is worth a look.
When to Call for Help
If the noise keeps coming back, the breaker pops, or there’s a sharp, electric scent: don’t ignore it. That’s your cue to shut it down and call a pro.
At Trapmasters Plumbing, we’ve got inspection cameras and diagnostic tools that let us see exactly what’s jamming things up. No guessing, no half fixes. You’ll get a free estimate first — always.
We’re fully licensed, insured, and on call 24 hours a day across Northwest Indiana. Whether you’re in LaPorte, Merrillville, or down in Porter County, we’ll be there.
Keeping It Quiet After It’s Fixed
Here’s the part most folks forget: once it’s quiet again, keep it that way.
- Don’t send bones or coffee grounds down there.
- Always use cold water before and after.
- Give it a clean with ice and some citrus fruit once a month.
- Schedule a yearly inspection (if your plumbing’s older).
